For a Golf Holiday, think Majorca

If you are looking for a golfing break then Majorca is a fantastic destination.

I was lucky enough to take a short trip in May, courtesy of the 5 star Mallorca Marriott Son Antem Golf Resort & Spa.

I set off from Stansted airport on Wednesday afternoon and after a short two hour flight we landed at Palma airport. After collecting my golf clubs I set off to the Son Antem resort which is just 15 km away.
The resort oozes class, set in a peaceful location and boasts two 18 hole golf courses, a spa, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, jogging path, pool and gym.

Obviously I only went for the golf but if you were to go out there with your wife or partner, she would have plenty to do if you managed to get yourself out on the course!

After a delicious meal at Forn, which is in Palma city centre located 20 km from the resort, Thursday morning arrived and we set off to play the main West Course at Son Antem. This course is more challenging then the East Course and has breathtaking views towards the Rand Mountain.

Rough stuff
The course is a par 72, built in 2001 and is 6445 yards long, the rough is very forgiving and has undulated greens which are surrounded by bunkers. I really enjoyed playing this course as it is a little like my home course, the fairways are tight so you have to be fairly straight off the tee and the greens are slick with a true roll.

Unfortunately I didn't have time to play the East Course which I'm told is suited to beginners and intermediate golfers with wide fairways and flat greens. The course starts with "easy" holes and finishes with more challenging holes.

After an evening in the hotel restaurant (and bar of course), Friday soon came around where we were being treated to a round at Son Gual.

For those of you who have flown to Majorca in the past you see this course as you come into land at Palma airport. The course looks amazing from the aeroplane and I was not disappointed when we arrived bright and early in the morning.

Another classy establishment which has already hosted a European Seniors Tour event, the practice facilities are second to none and well maintained by the 35 green keepers they have working on the course each day.
We decided to tee off from the white tees which made the par 72 course 6,820 yards. I would have played from the Black championship tees if they had been put out but unfortunately they weren't. Playing from these tees add nearly 400 yards onto the course making it 7,216 yards.

Links like
I would describe Son Gual as more of a links like course, with long rough for wayward shots, strategically placed bunkers and enticing water hazards. Which are just enough to make you have to think about the type of shot you should play. The wind on Thursday made the course difficult although every hole was either into or down wind. There were no cross winds.

In my opinion this is the best golf course I have ever played or seen (in real life) it is gorgeous and extremely well maintained. The greens are cut short and are very quick although quite receptive, with subtle breaks and borrows.

They must have heard I was coming as all pin positions were in tough spots although were very inviting to go for the flag. What I learnt is that you can run shots up the green and use the contours to get close to the hole.

After the round you can go for a sauna or have a massage before sitting on the outside decking which looks over the golf course. The restaurant at Son Gual is also highly recommended.
If you are planning a golf trip in the future I would seriously consider Majorca and doing the same sort of trip I took.

If you want to play two fantastic golf courses which are both a different test then Son Antem and Son Gual are your courses. I would also recommend staying at the Mallorca Marriott hotel, for friendly staff, peaceful location, facilities and the huge comfortable beds!
